Doug Flutie

Has anyone ever heard about Doug Flutie’s snagging skills? Apparently the man has caught several foul balls at Fenway Park. I’m thinking of writing about him in my book, but I can’t find definitive info about this. Want to help me out? Let’s see if we can compile a master list of all the balls he’s gotten. And while we’re at it, can you think of any other celebrities who have caught (or attempted to catch) baseballs at major league games? I already have a list (Charlie Sheen, Ben Affleck, Mark McGwire, Rickey Henderson, and more). Tell me who I’m missing…

joe jackson caught a ball at dodger stadium a few days after Michael died this summer. at the same game, a fan flew a remote control airplane around the field until a player on the d-backs knocked it out of the air…it delayed the game for about 5 minutes

This isnt really related, but i remember when bonds was one the verge of breaking one of the HR records, a super rich banker bought like very seat in the bleachers at dodger stadium or something crazy like that.

    Zack –

I was actually at a game in Fenway where Flutie caught a foul ball. I know that he did get a least 2 or 3 in the coupe of years I was there. He always had seats in the front row.

If you are adding this there is definitely one person you can not leave out of the book. While he wasn’t a fan at the game he was a man in the booth, HARRY CARAY!

He was famous for the fish net hanging out of the booth. I believe it started when he was working for the White Sox and then carried over to the Cubs broadcast booth.

    Good Luck!

Man winter is such a down and dreary time, I miss all the games, all of us talking about baseball and Zacks blogs. I know Zack likes the time to be able to catch up on stuff especially now with the new book. But come February we will all be excited again.

Zack, Flutie’s knack for getting foul balls is a bit of a legend up here in Boston. I think there was actually one game a few years ago where he ended up getting two or three balls over the course of the game. Here’s an interesting article from 2004 with his gameplan for getting a foul ball: If he gave up the glove it wasn’t for long, because the following year he had one when he snagged one during a Yankees game (and actually got some ribbing for bringing a glove to a game): If you’re interested I have a contact I could give you if you want to get in touch.

Thanks! Looks like you were half-right about Jackson, but I hadn’t heard about it at all, so this was very helpful.

Yup, I already have the banker guy covered (briefly) in the book.

    Thank you!!

Thanks for the info on Harry Caray. I’m gonna look into that…

Cool, thanks. I might just stick to foul balls and home runs in the book, in terms of the celebrity section, but I’m not sure yet. Either way, good to know.

Who’s Zach Hample? I only know who Zack Hample is. :-)

I used to feel that way. But you’re right…now I need the winter to relax.

Thanks! I’m gonna send you a separate email…

Hmm, that doesn’t seem to be a terribly reliable (or thorough source), but thanks. I’ll look into it and see if I can find more info.

Toronto’s Play by Play man Jamie Campbell (who was unfortunately fired this off-season) caught David Ortiz’ home run ball at the 2004 All-Star game.

I met Jamie at the Jays/Royals series this past summer in Kansas City (I am a huge Jays fan from Winnipeg, Manitoba) and I asked him if I could have his tie. He said it was his favourite one so he could not give it to me, and since it was the last game of the series that Sportsnet was covering, he couldn’t bring me one the next day. I got the chance later that summer to go to the Jays/Mariners series in Seattle so I met Jamie again and he threw his tie down to me from the broadcast booth! It’s my favourite baseball/memorabilia moment.
