Everlasting Glove

I’ve been using the same glove for about a decade, and it shows.

There’s duck tape holding the pocket together, there are rubber bands and Twist-Ties holding everything else together, the padding is slipping out of the palm, and the string is always in the way.

So why am I still using it?

Because it’s great for the glove trick (which is why all that string is there). There’s just something about the glove’s shape–I can’t explain it–that holds the rubber band in the perfect spot and makes the whole thing fool proof. And that’s why I’ve stuck with it year after year for all my snagging needs, even though it’s so flimsy and uncomfortable that I drop a few routine balls every season.

Recently, though, I decided it was time for a change, so for the first time ever, I brought my REAL glove–the one I used when I played in college–to a Major League game.

I’ve actually used this glove at my last three games, and it’s felt great. When I caught that home run during batting practice at Camden Yards, the ball made a ferocious THWACK!!! as it nestled snugly into the pocket.

I think this glove is here to stay, but I’m not quite ready to abandon the old one.

  1. Thomas

Out with the old, in with the new! You should try to sell the old glove on ebay as the famouse baseball collectors glove! Kidding of course… I have a strange feeling you’d never give it up.

  2. hockeyguy1011@aol.com

Well, Mr. Hample, unless you were in Houston last night and back in the City in Which You Never Sleep today, your streak of going to consecutive MLB cycle games is over, lol. That was pretty cool how you went to two in a row, pretty unique/ironic….
Come down to the Pro/Robbie ******************* Field sometime!

  3. gregorybarasch@yahoo.com

I assume you still bring the old glove to use for the glove trick, right?

Too bad about missing the cycle and ending your “streak.” But don’t worry, it’s not a real cycle … he did it in 11 innings. That doesn’t count!

  4. Nick

What is the brand of your everlasting glove? You should contact them about how long you’ve been using it sucessfully. Maybe you could star in a commercial for the glove, saying: “If I’ve caught over 2,500 Major League baseballs with this glove, you can too!”

  5. dodgerblue@gmail.com

    Hey Zack-
It’s dodgerssteven (previous email address) anyway, do you know anyone on THIS BLOG or any websites that can tell me who the “NICE and MEAN” guys are on TEAM USA BASKETBALL? I might be going to one of the exhibitions and I thought it might be quite odd to ask for a “basketball” so I’m just going for autographs.

Also, good job on your two Shea games. Your green hair is quite out of the ordinary…

  6. Zack

Perhaps the Hall of Fame would be interested?

Good call. I was going to mention that (and a few other things) in this entry, but I decided to stick to the gloves. If you pay for my plane ticket and put me up, I will not only come to Pro/Robbie ******************* Field, but I’ll be your personal ball-snagging mentor.

Right. For the time being, I’ll have both gloves with me at every game. Sorry for not making that clearer. The ending of my cycle streak is a bummer, but it was inevitable. I think it’s a real cycle. Don’t forget that I needed extra innings to extend my foul ball streak earlier this season.

Interesting idea. The brand is Mizuno. You know anyone at the company?

I know one guy (George, a.k.a. “loveg30”) who goes for basketball autographs. I’ll email him and tell him to look at your comment. The green hair, for those who haven’t seen the photo album, is a wig.

  7. gregorybarasch@yahoo.com

Yeah, I know it still counts as a cycle. I was just trying to look at the positive side of the situation. Anyway, good luck at your next game, whenever that might be. I hope somebody hits for the cycle at that game!

  8. Zack

Thanks. I’d rather see a triple play, though. I’ve never witnessed one of those in person.

  9. gregorybarasch@yahoo.com

That’s a good point. A triple play is something special. I’d love to see one of those in person (or on TV for that matter).

By the way Zack, can you (or anybody else here who knows) tell my how BP at Yankee Stadium works? What time do the gates open? Is security tight during BP? (Do they let you into the field level?) Where’s the best place to go for a ball?

  10. gregorybarasch@yahoo.com

Oh, and if you have bleacher tickets, will they let into the rest of the stadium for BP?

  11. gregorybarasch@yahoo.com

One more stupid question? Do you know if Yankee Stadium does BP before a day game on a day after the teams played a 4:00 game the day before?

  12. bergin42@msn.com

hey guys…how about the brewers and these trades? jeeze we have a whole new team now with bell, mench, cordero, and graffanino..its wierd now..but anyways.. does anyone know anything about the astros like good signers or good ball throwers..any help will be appreciated

  13. dodgerblue@gmail.com

    Hey Zack-
Thanks again for emailing your friend about the “USA BASKETBALL” team. If you can talk to him, can you tell him to put a post by Monday? I’m leaving for Asia on Tuesday so that’s why I can see the “Dream team” for some exhibition games.

Thanks again and again for your help. I don’t know if I failed to mention this, but when I caught six baseballs in Texas earlier this summer, it was because I looked at your picture. Actually, I caught all those baseballs because of your help.

  14. andy5353@aol.com

hey i am in boston and very bored so i writing nice win by the red sox!DAVID ORTIZ COMES THROUGH IN EXTRAS!anyways Yanksfan:nice yankees loss.I am seeing david wells pitch at fenway on monday for the first time since coming off the DL.hope he wins!

  15. andy5353@aol.com

I know,David wells is too old!
at least the yankeess lost though!

  16. yanksfan61293@aol.com

look at the comment I posted on ur blog.

So, are you gonna show up for the game 1 or 2 hours before the gates open, have a glove ready for the glove trick, lists of players on each team with photos, etc. etc.?

  17. ramones18@cox.net

i can trully agree zack. i always feel sceptic about using a new glove in games.

  18. jimmyjoejoejrchabadu@hotmail.com

My glove is pretty good for catching and I’m a pro catcher with my glove. My biggest fear is dropping a ball or one bouncing off my glove. This has happened once but not because of my fault.

I was about to get a ball from Saul Rivera and he threw it a bit to my left near some1 so I reached over and it hit the base of my glove and bounced back on the field several feet away from me. I got it back though from a security guard who created problems for me before, so I guess we’re even.

  19. andy5353@aol.com

  20. andy5353@aol.com

DAvid wells is coming off the DL FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS SEASON!from a knee injury!
    RETIRE WELLS!you wont help boston!

  21. andy5353@aol.com

i am just thankful the red sox won I CANT BELIEve julian taVAREZ PITCHED WITHOUT BLOWING THE GAME

  22. andy5353@aol.com

ohh and JULIAN TAvarez got the win that win is probably hos first in like months since he likes to blow games!

  23. Zack

Yankee Stadium opens two hours early. You can always get into the field level, even during the game, but you can NEVER go behind the dugouts unless you have a ticket for those sections. It’s a real pain. But other than that, security won’t hassle you. During BP, left field is good for milking balls from the visiting team, but you’ll see far more home runs land in the right field seats. You just have to make a choice. If you have bleacher tickets, you’re stuck there. No access to the rest of the ballpark. (Also lame.) I’m not sure whether the teams would take BP before a 1pm after they’ve played a 4pm game the day before. As I keep saying, it’s been soooo long since I’ve been to a day game that I have no idea. Not stupid questions, by the way.

I don’t know who signs on the Astros, but I can tell you that they’re THE stingiest road team in terms of giving away baseballs. Dan Wheeler has always been nice, but beyond him…good luck.

How did my picture help you? What picture? I emailed my friend and told him to visit this blog and answer your question. I hope he gets the message in time.

Thanks for checking in from the road.

Cool. I’m glad you understand where I’m coming from.

Over the years, security has cost me hundreds of balls, but only given me a few dozen…so in my case, it’s not even close to being even.

  24. dodgerblue@gmail.com

    Hey Zack-
The picture that said, “The Gap in Arlington provides a decent “glove trick” opportunity.” I stood right in front of the gap.

  25. jimmyjoejoejrchabadu@hotmail.com

Zack how many balls have you caught at the Rogers Centre in total and whats your record for 1 day.

  26. gregorybarasch@yahoo.com

Thanks again, Zack, you were a big help. The Yankees took BP, but the Devil Rays didn’t. Everything you said was right on the money. I just had a horribly unlucky time of things. I only ended up with one ball, but I could have easily snagged five or six. But whatever, I had fun. Thanks again.

  27. andy5353@aol.com

Or dont that works too.WHY THE heck did the YANKEES aquire BOBBY ABreau and Cory Lidle that was not smart?

  28. andy5353@aol.com

Okay well I just hope my red sox win.CURT SCHILLINg can win.Because the yankees already won.THANKS To Johnny ******* Damon.DAMON *****

  29. andy5353@aol.com

BTW-YAnks fan dont plan on the yanees gaining ground on the red sox(you either JImmy for the jays)CUZ schilling will win.IF they keep JUlian TAvarez out of the game so he cant blow the game.He was lucky last night!

  30. gregorybarasch@yahoo.com

KAYLEE, STOP TALKING TO YOURSELF!! The last like 12 comments are you!! That’s funny.

  31. trueplaya_202@hotmail.com

yeah realyy… noone cares about the red sox if we wanted to see that schill gave up 5 runsin 2 innings wed look at the box score. It is also annoying how a Red Sox fan seems to be obssessed with the jays to.

but back on topic zack that glove trick is awesome how you ever though of making that is amazing

  32. Zack

I’ve caught 12 balls at the Rogers Centre: seven in one game (including a game ball) and five in another.

Sorry things didn’t turn out better for you, but at least you were able to get ONE ball. Shutouts are the worst.

Thanks. I came up with the trick way back in the day, pretty much out of necessity. I was fed up with the amount of balls I kept missing that were just beyond my reach.

  33. andy5353@aol.com

ZAck-Okay lets see.what was good about my first ever game @fenway…Ummmmmm…….I got aball from MARK LORETTA during Bp.That was it though.
Because I was talking to Julian Tavarez and Jonathan Papelbon and Julian Tavarez did no let me go he kept talking and talking. They(the red sox) lost.Schilling got rocked.10-4 by the Angels. It was a very boring game.I was on my labtop most of the time.Hopefully tomorrow will be better. It should be.My guy grady Sizmore will be in town.

  34. yanksfan61293@aol.com

Today, I completed the last level. I skipped making levels 6-9, which I will do tommorow. It is almost done.

    Let’s Go Yankees

  35. jimmyjoejoejrchabadu@hotmail.com

They don’t have a prayer but they have a load of money, which isn’t fair. The Jays have 125 million less salary than the Yanks and we’re pretty close. O yea and how many balls u get in Fenway tdy?

  36. kayleexxx@aol.com

I got a new account by the way BUT,David Wells just proved he cant pitch.Giving up 8 runs in 4 innings.
Btw-jimmy i am still at the game.Writing on my laptop.

  37. dannyzhang312@hotmail.com

So, you still set on going to sweltering Baltimore tomorrow. It’s going to be like 103, I heard!

  38. yanksfan61293@aol.com

um…yes the Yanks have a prayer. They are only like 1 or 2 games behind the Red Sox and we still have 2 months to go. Plus, we just made 2 good trades (Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle for 1 solid prospect and 3 not so good prospects and we got Craig Wilson for the Contents of a garbage bag, Shawn Chacon)

We have more than just a “prayer”

  39. kayleexxx@aol.com

Yanksfan:Okay maybe you have a prayer or more btw it is a half game lead we have on the yankees the way our game is going it might be a tie by tomoroow morning!I HATE DAVID WElls!

  40. yanksfan61293@aol.com

I’d say that it was VERY IDIOTIC for the Red Sox gm (Theo Epstein) just sit there and watch the Yankees GM (Brian Cashman) make some good deals. The pressure was on the Red Sox to do something and they didn’t. A very stupid move by Epstein, especially with Trot Nixon headed to the DL, and Jason Varitek not performing too too well. He and Mirabelli are aging catchers. Very stupid, I think.

  41. yanksfan61293@aol.com

Ha! So if the *** lose tonight, the YANKEES will have a half game lead OVER the Red Sox! Ha!

  42. yanksfan61293@aol.com

and I heard Varitek got pulled from the game because of twisting his knee.

  43. kayleexxx@aol.com

Yes varitek did,Not another injury please!i think theo was stupid too we need pitching!theo forgot that i guess!WE NEED TIM WAKEFIELD BACK!DAVID WELLS aint cutting it!

  44. yanksfan61293@aol.com

    Hold On, Kaylee

You mean to tell me, that I just bashed the Red Sox and their Front Office for not doing anything this year at the deadline, and you AGREE! I always knew I was right when it comes to baseball!

  45. yanksfan61293@aol.com

well, its true. I predict that the Red Sox will do worse than the Yankees, starting tonight, based simply on the Red Sox doing nothing this year at the deadline, not my “Yankee bias”

    It’s gonna kill the team.

  46. kayleexxx@aol.com

well that may be true if they keep pitching this way!Yeesh!are you telling me i wotnt have a team to cheer for n octber?

  47. yanksfan61293@aol.com

maybe…ultimately, it depends on how well the Blue Jays do from now on and how well your pitching holds up. I believe the Yanks can beat the B-Jays, but it’s now ultimately a 3 team race in the AL East

  48. kayleexxx@aol.com

he(theo) said he didnt want to giveup any of or young pitching I said what young pitching !

  49. yanksfan61293@aol.com

The Sox do have young pitching. It’s their old pitching that’s killing them. Too many oldies on the Sox pitching staff

  50. kayleexxx@aol.com

someone also wanted Mike LOWELL for Julio Lugo straight up theo said no!

  51. kayleexxx@aol.com

I know you could tello by lowells errors last night.HE looked foolih out there on the basepaths

  52. yanksfan61293@aol.com

bottom of the ninth now, huh, Kaylee?

looks like the sox lost which means…

  53. yanksfan61293@aol.com

ya know what’s funny. It was around this time last year when the Yanks finally moved into 1st place, and they ended up winning the division!

  54. yanksfan61293@aol.com

    UR ON STEROIDS **** IT!!!!!

  55. yanksfan61293@aol.com

as a matter of fact, I do think the Yanks are still in it. We are only 1 game back!

  56. ramones18@cox.net

DAVID ORTIZ!!!!!!!!! SENOR OCTUBRE!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! HE’S UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

  57. kayleexxx@aol.com

okay i will remember that come October.I guess the yanks will be in and the red sox wont.I will remember that

  58. kayleexxx@aol.com

RAMONES:I know that ninth inning made my night!I was at that game!

  59. ramones18@cox.net

hey stupid yanks fan, who’s in 1st place sole posession of the al east?

  60. Zack

Congrats on getting four balls in two games. That’s impressive, especially at Fenway.

    Thanks for the latest update.

No Baltimore. Change of plans. Gonna blog about it within the next hour or two…

Interesting email addresses you got there. I once had one with Rey Ordonez’s name, and people used to write to me all the time, thinking that I was THE Rey Ordonez. Duh.
