Babe Who?

I know, I know, I haven’t posted anything for a while. I’m just really enjoying the offseason and all the free time that comes with it. I actually have a social life these days. It’s amazing!
This week, I’m back in “crazy writer mode,” working on the proposal for what I hope will be my next baseball book.

Other than that, there’s not much going on in my baseball world. I will say, though, that one of the tourists I met in Costa Rica—I forget if it was the guy from Sweden or Finland—had never heard of Babe Ruth. He could only name ONE baseball player. (Two, if you count “Kevin Costner.”) Anyone want to take a guess?

This is a good one, folks. I traded emails with Zack earlier in the day and my initial top 10 list included the right name, he said. When I whittled it down to five, he said I omitted the person’s name. I don’t want to give it away here but you guys are way, way, way, way off…

  2. Paul

Either Shoeless Joe, or Moonlight Graham (the person had seen Field of Dreams).

By the way, check out BOSTONSBESTBLOG.

  3. Zack

There IS a correct guess here. The person hadn’t seen “Field of Dreams,” but had heard Simon & Garfunkel.

    Good try, Ben.

Of course, that would have to be Joltin’ Joe D., as in “Where have you gone…?”

Amazing that the person had heard of ONE really famous Yankee, but not THE famous Yankee…go figure!

Where can I get my price? ;)

Kurt: Baseball isn’t a big sport here, and Babe wasn’t married to Marilyn Monroe.

zack-king of major league snag-Hello my friend! sorry for not getting back to you sooner, been real busy buying a house and working at sea. just wanted to thank-you for the picture and letter you sent in 2000, I, Lightning Quick of Safeco Field very much appreciated it. It was great to hear from you then, going to safeco tomorrow for the annual fanfest, cant wait for the season to start!!! i am over 850 career balls now, been a couple of slow seasons having to work overseas…looking forward to hearing from you!!!Two years ago I competed for a ball and the guy was using a mitt with pencil, I got a chill hoping it was you, but it was a young fan who had emailed you. If ever you can make it here, have a ticket for you. Take care mi amigo, and good luck this year and always, your friend, Lightning Quick of Safeco Field

I’m guessing that “young fan” was me, about 3 or 4 years ago I used a mitt with a pencil contraption, but have since moved on a more advanced peach can with pennies and rubber band contraption. Over the last 3 years I’ve amassed about 226 balls at Safeco, averaging about 4 every game I attend BP… I’m sure we’ve seen each other out in LF. (And is it just me or are the ushers getting meaner and meaner?)

  8. Zack

At first, I was thinking along the same lines as you, but…

    …you’re absolutely right.

Is it really you?! My god, where ya been all this time? So good to hear from you. I made it to Safeco for one game in June of 2002. Too bad I missed you. Now, at this point, I really can’t say when I’ll be back, but maybe it’s just as well because between you and…

…you guys seem to have a monopoly on the place. What IS it with the ushers?

Do you think you might reach the magical #1,000 this year?

All of us are still waiting for your 2005 snagging stats. How about it?

Zack-Yes, it is me. reenergized after the fanfest yesterday at safeco! 27 autographs gotten yesterday, chance to play on the field, wuwho, lets get the season underway!! Going those 12 years without a ball, after what almost happened on the first base side, lightning quick would rather be lucky than good, be in the right place at the right time, and if I am lightning quick……..:) sometimes we get a ball…..3 is my number! Since our correspondence then, 1,000 has been my goal, before that 100 in a season, before that……12 years no baseballs, not even one, so…..It is time for the new season to get underway!!! Good Luck to all of us, and arent the memories awesome!!! Leleph-good to hear from you, I do remember you, I wear my gray m’s with HUS and #3….the hot corner is always were it is at….yes, they are a little more forceful, but my motto from the kingdome to here, is”They cant cover the whole field” i am lightning quick of safeco field :)

  10. Zack

Man, it’s always been my dream to play on a major league field. I had a tryout with the Mets back in the day, but that doesn’t really count. Three ground balls and out. Couldn’t even participate in the 60-yard dash because I had a strained quad, but I was slow anyway.

Wherever you go and whatever you do, keep in touch, and keep us all posted on your snagging progress/prowess this season.
